Embedding your site’s content in iframes on other domains could impact search rankings. Google’s John Mueller advises webmasters to block such embeds for better SEO. Learn which security headers matter most.

John Mueller, a prominent figure at Google, has cautioned that allowing your website’s content to be embedded in iframes on external sites could negatively affect your search rankings. In a recent statement on Reddit, Mueller explained that while most security headers do not directly influence SEO, blocking iframe embedding from other domains is an exception that can have a real impact.

Mueller specifically recommended using either the legacy x-frame-options header or the more modern Content Security Policy (CSP) frame-ancestors directive to prevent unauthorized iframe embedding. According to him, these measures not only enhance site security but also help protect your site’s visibility in search results.

He clarified that, aside from these headers, most security-related HTTP headers are primarily focused on user safety and do not play a significant role in how Google ranks pages. This distinction is important for publishers and site owners who want to balance security best practices with SEO performance.

Industry experts have previously discussed the intersection of technical SEO and Google’s evolving features. For example, recent updates to Google Search Console have introduced new AI-specific metrics, as highlighted in coverage of the Milan Search Central Live event, showing Google’s ongoing focus on transparency and actionable insights for site owners.
