Google Images Unveils Immersive Gallery Redesign for 25th Anniversary

A major redesign brings a dynamic, personalized image gallery to the Google Images homepage. The update introduces real-time collections, new browsing features, and enhanced search options for U.S. desktop users.

Marking its 25th anniversary, Google Images has launched its most significant homepage overhaul to date. The familiar minimalist search box at images.google.com has been replaced by a visually rich, real-time gallery of curated image collections, offering users a more immersive browsing experience.

Brad Kellet, Senior Engineering Director for Search, announced the update, describing the new homepage as a "dynamic, immersive gallery of images from across the web - updated in real time and intelligently tailored to your unique interests." The redesign aims to make image discovery more engaging and relevant for each user.

The revamped interface features a prominent search bar at the top, allowing users to search by text, voice, or image. Below, the homepage now displays a continuously updated gallery of images, reflecting trending topics and personalized interests. Users can also browse and save images to their own collections, which appear as tabs above the main gallery for quick access and inspiration.

In addition to the visual overhaul, Google has retained core search functionalities. The search box remains easily accessible, supporting multiple input methods. The new collections feature enables users to organize and revisit saved images, streamlining the process of exploring visual ideas.

Google stated that the redesigned homepage will roll out to desktop users in the U.S. over the coming weeks, initially in English. Access requires signing in with a Google Account. The update reflects a broader trend among major platforms to enhance visual search and discovery, as seen with recent AI-powered features on other services. For example, YouTube recently introduced an AI-driven search tool for U.S. users, expanding interactive discovery options across Google’s ecosystem. More details on that rollout can be found in this coverage of YouTube's AI search expansion.

Google Images, first launched in 2001, has evolved from a simple search tool into a central hub for visual content discovery. The latest redesign underscores Google’s commitment to adapting its platforms to changing user behaviors and technological advancements.

As of 2026, Google remains the world’s leading search engine, processing over 8.5 billion searches per day. Google Images accounts for a significant share of this volume, with billions of image queries handled monthly. The platform’s ongoing updates reflect Google’s strategy to maintain its dominance in both text and visual search markets.
