A new AI search tool lets signed-in US desktop users 13 and up ask questions in plain English and get instant answers with video clips, Shorts, and follow-up prompts. The feature is expanding beyond Premium members.

Ask YouTube, the platform’s conversational AI search tool, is now available to all signed-in US desktop users aged 13 and older. This marks a major expansion from its initial rollout, which was limited to YouTube Premium subscribers 18 and up who opted in earlier this year.

With Ask YouTube, users can type natural-language questions directly into the search bar and receive AI-generated responses that blend text, video segments, long-form videos, and Shorts. The tool also supports follow-up questions, allowing viewers to refine their search results in a more interactive way.

Standard YouTube Search remains fully accessible. Users can switch back to traditional video listings at any time by selecting the All option on the Ask YouTube results page or by returning to the Home page. Ask YouTube is offered as an additional search experience, not a replacement for the classic search function.

Currently, the feature is only available to signed-in users conducting English-language searches on desktop. Signed-out viewers and supervised accounts are not eligible. YouTube has announced plans to expand Ask YouTube to more devices, languages, and regions in the coming months.

For creators, Ask YouTube offers a new discovery channel. Videos, Shorts, and previews featured in AI responses count toward total view metrics and YouTube Partner Program eligibility. Each featured video displays its title and channel name, giving creators added visibility. YouTube recommends that creators publish unique, high-quality content with clear chapters and descriptive titles to improve their chances of being surfaced by the AI system.

This expansion puts conversational AI search in front of a much broader US audience, potentially changing how users find and engage with video content. As AI-driven search tools become more common, questions about reliability and manipulation have surfaced. For example, a recent study found that short user comments on platforms like Reddit can influence AI-powered search results, raising concerns about the integrity of these systems. More details on this phenomenon can be found in this analysis of how Reddit posts can sway AI search tools.

According to YouTube, the company will continue to refine Ask YouTube based on user feedback and plans to introduce the feature to a global audience over time.

Launched in 2005, YouTube has grown into the world’s largest video-sharing platform, with over 2.7 billion monthly logged-in users as of 2026. The company, owned by Google, has consistently invested in AI and machine learning to enhance search, recommendations, and content moderation. Its YouTube Partner Program has paid out more than $50 billion to creators since its inception, reflecting the platform’s central role in the creator economy.
