A new AI layer beneath Android is changing how devices interact with websites. Gemini Intelligence enables agents to complete tasks for users, signaling a major shift for search, ecommerce, and site optimization.

Gemini Intelligence, introduced by Google at the Android Show on May 12, marks a pivotal shift in how digital devices interact with the web. This new AI layer operates beneath the Android operating system, powering laptops, phones, watches, and glasses with agent-driven capabilities.

The recently launched Googlebook is designed around an AI agent that can interpret on-screen content and take action for users. For example, highlighting a date in an email prompts the agent to schedule a meeting, while selecting furniture in an app allows it to visualize those items in a user's living room.

This evolution means operating systems can now perform tasks without requiring users to open web pages themselves. As a result, the way people search, discover, and shop online is set to change dramatically, with AI agents handling much of the process on behalf of users.

Traditionally, users typed queries into search engines, browsed through links, and selected sites to visit. The SEO industry has long focused on helping websites rank higher to attract those clicks. With Gemini Intelligence, however, AI agents take over the intermediary steps-reading pages, filling out forms, and even completing transactions. Instead of users visiting sites directly, agents do the work for them.

One early example is Chrome Auto Browse, which debuted in January using Gemini 3. This feature manages complex tasks such as researching flights, filling out forms, scheduling appointments, and managing subscriptions, pausing only to confirm purchases with the user.

For ecommerce, the move toward agentic AI is especially significant. A 2025 preprint study found that providing agents with pre-structured interaction data reduced processing requirements by 67.6% and cut costs by 34% to 63% compared to parsing full HTML documents. Task success rates remained high-97.9% versus 98.8% for traditional methods.

AI agents favor websites that enable seamless transactions, making efficiency a key factor. Gemini Intelligence relies on two protocols to ensure agents can reliably interact with sites: WebMCP and the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).

WebMCP is an API that lets websites declare their functions as structured tools, such as inventory searches, checkout initiation, or support requests. This gives AI agents a clear menu of available actions. Co-developed by Google and Microsoft, WebMCP is currently in origin trials on Chrome 149, with Firefox planning support in Q3 2026 and Safari expected to follow in Q4.

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) provides a standardized way for agents to discover products, build carts, complete checkouts, and manage orders without users needing to visit the site. Google’s Universal Cart feature collects items as users browse across Search, Gemini, YouTube, and Gmail. UCP was co-developed by Google, Shopify, Walmart, Target, Etsy, Wayfair, PayPal, and Stripe, and launched in January.

As websites transition from destinations to backends for agent activity, the focus shifts from ranking in search results to ensuring agents can complete key actions. Site owners should audit their most valuable flows-such as lead forms, booking systems, or checkout pages-to determine if agents can use them. Checking the Lighthouse Agentic Browsing score, similar to monitoring Core Web Vitals, can help assess agent usability.

For ecommerce operators, verifying that checkout processes are accessible via UCP or ACP is crucial. While agents must still find and trust a site before acting, optimizing for agentic interaction is quickly becoming essential.

Google, founded in 1998 and now a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., reported over $300 billion in annual revenue in 2025. The company’s Android operating system powers more than 3 billion active devices worldwide, making the rollout of Gemini Intelligence a significant development for both users and the broader digital ecosystem.
