Organic search clicks have dropped 42% since Google expanded AI Overviews, with YMYL publishers hit hardest. New data shows B2B tech sites bucking the trend, while AI-generated content floods the SERPs and competition intensifies.

New data from Semrush reveals a sharp divide in top-of-funnel (TOFU) content performance across industries, as AI Overviews and large language models (LLMs) reshape Google Search. Since the rollout of expanded AI Overviews, organic search clicks have fallen by 42%, with YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) sectors like finance, healthcare, and legal seeing the steepest declines. Meanwhile, B2B tech publishers are experiencing traffic gains, highlighting a growing gap in which TOFU strategies still deliver results.

To assess the impact, year-over-year traffic estimates for August 2026 were compared across 30 major digital publishers in nine sectors, including domains such as aws.amazon.com, mayoclinic.org, and hubspot.com. Pages ranking for “what is…”, “how to…”, and those with “guide” in the URL were grouped as TOFU content. The findings show that every major publisher in finance, healthcare, legal, and consumer tech lost TOFU traffic, with Legalzoom.com reporting a 90% drop attributed directly to Google Search changes. In contrast, cybersecurity, marketing/sales software, and cloud infrastructure domains saw TOFU traffic improve over the same period.

Further analysis compared TOFU with middle-of-funnel (MOFU) content-such as product comparison and “best” pages-across the same industries. The trends were nearly identical: both TOFU and MOFU content rose or fell together within each sector, suggesting that industry and audience matter more than funnel stage in determining content performance.

Industry Trends

Four key takeaways emerged from the data. First, industry was the primary driver of success in 2026, with both TOFU and MOFU content tracking similarly within each vertical. Second, TOFU remains a viable strategy in B2B tech, where buyers require in-depth research and expertise that AI Overviews and LLMs cannot fully satisfy. Third, YMYL brands shifting budget from TOFU to MOFU are unlikely to escape the negative effects of AI-driven search changes. Finally, the decline in YMYL traffic among top publishers suggests even smaller sites in these categories are struggling to compete for dwindling organic clicks.

Strategies for 2027

Looking ahead, several TOFU strategies show promise despite the challenges. Local search remains resilient, as LLMs lack reliable location awareness and Google’s AI Overviews appear less frequently for local queries. Effective local SEO in 2027 will require more than programmatic location pages, focusing instead on content tailored to specific community needs. Interactive digital tools-such as calculators and screeners-also stand out, as LLMs rarely reproduce these and often cite them directly in AI summaries. Real subject matter expert (SME) input is increasingly valuable, with human-authored content offering nuance, original data, and insights that AI-generated summaries cannot match.

AI Content at Scale

The rise of hyper-scaled AI content generation is reshaping TOFU strategies. While AI excels at producing generic informational articles, recent trends suggest diminishing returns for fully automated content. Improvements in AI writing quality have slowed, and detection tools like Claude’s watermarking and Pangram on Substack are making AI-generated copy more visible. Google’s evolving stance on AI content, including recent spam updates targeting scaled output, signals increased scrutiny. Studies indicate that AI-assisted human content performs well, but fully automated, high-volume AI content offers little long-term value.

In summary, TOFU content in B2B tech continues to drive traffic, while YMYL publishers face mounting challenges from AI Overviews and increased competition. Local SEO and interactive tools remain effective, but content creators must now outperform both competitors and AI-generated summaries to earn clicks in crowded SERPs. The central question for 2027: does your page truly deserve to be published?
