Springer Reshapes Leadership After Telegraph Media Group Acquisition

Leadership roles at Axel Springer have shifted following its Telegraph Media Group deal. The company aims to streamline decision-making and strengthen oversight. Key executives now oversee publishing, finance, and HR across multiple markets.

Axel Springer has overhauled its executive structure following the acquisition of Telegraph Media Group, a move designed to consolidate responsibilities and improve operational efficiency across its publishing business. The changes, effective July 1, impact both the management board and the central Head Office, with the goal of tightening control and clarifying leadership roles.

Claudius Senst now leads all publishing operations for Axel Springer in Germany, the UK, and the US, according to industry reports. Mark Dekan remains on the board, continuing to oversee the commerce segment, which includes Awin, Bonial, and Idealo, as well as mergers and acquisitions. Dekan also manages the Ringier Axel Springer Poland joint venture and the minority stake in AS Classifieds.

Valentin Schöndienst continues as Chief Product Officer and Chief Technology Officer, reporting directly to CEO Mathias Döpfner. The Head Office has also been restructured: Nicolai Cummerow has taken on the role of Chief Financial Officer and now reports to Döpfner. In addition to his ongoing responsibilities as Chief Transformation Officer, Cummerow now oversees all Head Office functions except M&A, and has assumed leadership of the Portfolio + Investments division, previously managed by Patrick Wehrmann. Wehrmann recently became CFO at Telegraph Media Group.

Springer has also created a new Finance division, led by Thomas Skowronek as Senior Vice President Finance. This unit consolidates accounting, financial planning and analysis, treasury, and the shared-service center Axel Springer Medien Accounting Service. Skowronek reports to Cummerow.

In HR, Clara von Hugo has been appointed Global Chief Human Resources Officer, responsible for all HR matters worldwide, including talent acquisition, development, and supporting ongoing organizational transformation. She reports directly to Cummerow.

These changes significantly expand Cummerow's influence, as he now manages most central corporate functions under CEO Döpfner. The restructuring follows a pattern seen in other European media groups, such as the engagement-focused model adopted by Swedish publishers, as discussed in this recent report on newsroom leadership and operational models.
