Link Insertion Prices Plunge, But Quality Remains Scarce

A new analysis of over 420,000 websites finds link insertions are far cheaper than guest posts, but nearly all are offered on low-quality sites. High-authority placements are rare and command steep premiums. Here’s what the 2026 data reveals.

Link insertions have become a popular, lower-cost alternative to guest posting for those seeking backlinks, but new data from a 421,259-site database shows the tradeoff is steep: while insertions average just $179-less than half the $461 average for guest posts-they’re overwhelmingly available only on low-quality sites.

Out of the entire database, just 62,916 sites (14.9%) offer link insertions at all, compared to near-universal guest post availability. The pricing reflects the lighter workload: insertions involve adding a link to existing content, not commissioning a new article. But the numbers reveal a clear quality gap.

When broken down by Ahrefs’ Domain Rating (DR), the lowest-tier sites (DR 0-9) charge an average of $113 per insertion, while the rare high-authority sites (DR 80+) demand $461. However, high-DR options are extremely limited-only 120 sites in the database fall into this top bracket. Prices do rise with authority, but the supply of premium placements is almost nonexistent.

Traffic data paints a similar picture. The majority of sites offering insertions (27,722) have less than 100 monthly organic visits, with an average price of $137. Only 355 sites with over 100,000 monthly visits offer insertions, and these command an average of $510.

Industry breakdowns show Sports sites are the most expensive for link insertions, averaging $345 across 2,100 sites. Other high-priced categories include Pets & Animals, Education, Tech & Science, and Travel, all clustered around $167-$169. On the other end, Law & Government sites are the cheapest at $126, followed by Health & Wellness, E-commerce & Shopping, and Marketing & Advertising, all under $146.

Quality remains the biggest challenge. According to the study’s tiering system, 97.5% of link insertions are available only on “Low Quality” sites-those with less than 10,000-40,000 monthly organic visits and DR below 40. Only 143 sites in the entire database qualify as genuinely high-quality (High or Top Tier) and offer insertions. Top Tier insertions average $778, nearly seven times the price of low-quality placements.

News sites follow the same pattern: just 14.5% offer insertions, and less than 1% of those are in the High or Top Tier. The premium publications most valued by digital PR professionals are almost entirely absent from the paid insertion market.

The data suggests that while link insertions can be effective when placed on relevant, authoritative content, the vast majority of marketplace offerings fall short. Real value comes from securing insertions on quality sites through direct outreach and genuine editorial relevance, not from buying low-cost placements on low-traffic domains.

For those considering link insertions as part of their SEO strategy, the key is to focus on quality over quantity-identifying authoritative sites, ensuring relevance, and pitching a compelling reason for inclusion. The shortcut of buying from marketplace lists rarely delivers the authority or impact that drives results.
