A new fund will back one filmmaker with £10,000, editorial support, and wide distribution. The initiative seeks urgent, character-driven stories about democracy in Europe.
Media professionals focused on documentary production and international distribution have a new funding opportunity as Guardian Documentaries and arte.tv launch a £10,000 fund for short films on democracy in Europe. The initiative, announced at Sheffield DocFest, is now open to filmmakers across the continent.
The selected project will receive £10,000 in production funding, editorial guidance, and distribution on both the Guardian and arte.tv platforms. The winning documentary will also be translated into seven European languages, expanding its reach to a broad audience.
Organizers are seeking character-driven short films that address urgent challenges facing European democracies, including rising authoritarianism, threats to press freedom, and declining civic trust. The goal is to highlight personal stories that illustrate these issues and encourage public debate.
Jess Gormley, executive producer at Guardian Documentaries, said the partnership aims to support filmmakers who are close to the most pressing stories, especially as democracy faces new pressures. Catherine Colas, commissioning editor at ZDF/ARTE, emphasized the ability of short films to reflect societal challenges and amplify emerging voices.
Filmmakers can submit their pitches starting June 11, 2026. The chosen documentary will benefit from creative support and a platform to reach audiences throughout Europe and beyond.
