Publishers facing declining ad and subscription revenue now have a new option. Flip-Pay Supporter lets readers contribute directly, offering a flexible alternative to traditional paywalls. The platform is available to publishers of any size.
Media organizations searching for new ways to generate revenue beyond paywalls and subscriptions now have a fresh option. Flip-Pay has introduced Flip-Pay Supporter, a platform designed to help publishers collect voluntary reader contributions while keeping content accessible.
According to Flip-Pay, the new system integrates directly with publishers’ content management systems and circulation tools. It enables one-off donations, recurring memberships, and legacy gifts, all managed through a single interface. Publishers operating as non-profits or charities can also access specialized reporting features.
Flip-Pay Supporter was developed after the company’s experience building donation and membership infrastructure for HuffPost. Most recently, the platform was deployed at scale for The Salt Lake Tribune, a US non-profit newspaper group. In May 2026, the Tribune lowered its paywall and transitioned over 32,000 paying subscribers to a voluntary membership model using Flip-Pay’s technology.
Paul McCarthy-Brain, CEO of Flip-Pay, said many publishers are actively seeking to diversify their income streams and are exploring direct-to-reader revenue models that move beyond subscriptions and advertising. He noted that Flip-Pay Supporter is now available as an off-the-shelf solution for publishers looking to embed multiple reader revenue options into their operations.
The platform allows each publisher to host a customizable, branded donation hub. It integrates with existing subscriber systems, supports newsletter sign-ups, and can transition subscribers from platforms like Piano or Naviga into donors or members. Flip-Pay’s adaptive messaging targets different reader cohorts at key moments, and the system can run subscriptions and donations in parallel, with features such as automatic print entitlements for major donors. Real-time analytics and financial reporting feed directly into publishers’ ERP and data systems.
Beyond donations, Flip-Pay enables publishers to manage registrations, identity, payments, and e-edition access in partnership with PageSuite, consolidating multiple third-party services into a single infrastructure. The company says Flip-Pay Supporter can be implemented quickly for publishers of any size.
As publishers experiment with new revenue models, some are also revisiting paywall strategies. For example, Mirror recently introduced subscription tiers for digital readers, reflecting broader industry efforts to adapt to changing traffic and revenue patterns. More details on that shift can be found in this report on Mirror's paywall and subscription changes.
