SPUR Coalition has expanded to 36 members, adding major publishers worldwide. The group aims to set new standards for AI use of journalistic content. This move signals a shift in how publishers approach AI licensing.

Media organizations focused on protecting their content in the AI era are watching closely as the SPUR Coalition announces a significant international expansion. At the World News Media Congress in Marseille, the non-profit revealed that 30 new members have joined its ranks, including CMA Media from France, The Globe and Mail, Ringier, Der Standard, Bonnier News, and several Canadian publishers. This brings the coalition’s total membership to 36.

The SPUR Coalition, which launched earlier this year with founding members BBC, FT, Guardian, Sky and The Times, is working to establish fair, transparent, and sustainable standards for how AI systems use journalistic content. Mediahuis joined the group last month, further strengthening its European presence.

According to the coalition, its new standards will help publishers monitor how AI platforms use their content in real time. SPUR is encouraging more journalism organizations to participate in shaping the future of AI licensing and content protection.

This expansion comes as publishers worldwide seek more control over how their work is used by AI platforms.
