A major reorganization renames DMG Media as Daily Mail and elevates Vere Harmsworth to executive chairman. Metro moves to Harmsworth Media. The changes are effective immediately.
Executives and publishers in the UK media sector are watching closely as DMGT implements a significant restructuring, renaming its consumer news division from DMG Media to Daily Mail and appointing Vere Harmsworth as executive chairman. This move signals a shift in leadership and brand strategy for one of the country's most recognized news organizations.
Vere Harmsworth, previously chief commercial officer at DMG Media and son of owner Lord Rothermere, steps into the executive chairman role at Daily Mail. The reorganization also transfers Metro, formerly under DMG Media, to Harmsworth Media, which already includes New Scientist and The I Paper. Daily Mail now encompasses the Mail titles and their digital brands, consolidating editorial and commercial operations under the new name.
According to a staff note from Lord Rothermere, the changes are designed to support the growth ambitions of the company's news brands. Both Daily Mail and Harmsworth Media will operate within Associated Newspapers Ltd, overseen by a board chaired by Lord Rothermere. The company stated that these changes are effective immediately.
Lord Rothermere emphasized the need to adapt to rapid changes in the media sector, highlighting ongoing investment in talent, technology, and products to serve audiences across platforms. The leadership shake-up follows earlier 2024 changes, when Mail Online editor Danny Groom was promoted to publisher and chief executive of DMG Media, while former CEO Rich Caccappolo became vice chairman. Both Groom and Caccappolo will continue in their current roles at Daily Mail.
This reorganization comes as publishers face shifting audience behaviors and evolving distribution channels. Recent data shows that direct news traffic is declining, with more readers turning to social and video platforms for news, as reported in a recent analysis of Reuters Institute findings.
