Anthropic Faces Refund Pressure After Claude Fable 5 Pulled Globally

Refund requests surge after Fable 5 is withdrawn worldwide. Some users report mixed results, with eligibility tied to specific upgrade dates. Anthropic’s response varies by region and purchase timing.

Anthropic customers are demanding refunds after the company abruptly suspended access to Claude Fable 5, following a U.S. government export control directive. The move, announced late Friday, forced Anthropic to withdraw both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models from all users worldwide, regardless of nationality or location. The directive specifically targeted foreign nationals, but Anthropic said the “net effect” was a total suspension for everyone.

Fable 5, which consumed about twice as many tokens as Opus 4.8, was released to subscribers on June 9 and was set to remain available until June 23 before transitioning to API-only access. Many users upgraded their subscriptions to access the advanced model, only to lose access days later. Now, those customers are seeking clarity on whether they qualify for refunds.

Reports on Reddit indicate that some users who upgraded after Fable 5’s launch have received emails from Anthropic offering a “prorated refund.” The offer applies only to those who purchased or upgraded between 10:00 AM PDT on June 9, 2026, and 12:00 AM PDT on June 14, 2026. Customers must cancel their plan by June 20 to be eligible. However, not all users who canceled have received refunds, according to posts on the platform.

European Union customers appear to have more success, often using Anthropic’s AI-powered support chatbot within the Claude app to request refunds. EU law provides a 14-day cooling-off period for digital services, allowing buyers to seek refunds without justification. Anthropic has not yet issued a public statement clarifying its global refund policy.

The Fable 5 suspension is the latest flashpoint in Anthropic’s ongoing legal battle with the U.S. government. The company is suing after being labeled a “supply chain risk,” reportedly in retaliation for refusing to let its AI be used in autonomous warfare and surveillance. A San Francisco judge has granted Anthropic a preliminary injunction, temporarily halting the government’s directive as the case proceeds.

Anthropic stated that the government cited a “jailbreaking” method that could bypass safeguards and potentially enable cyberattacks. The company maintains that the disclosed jailbreaks are either harmless or offer no significant advantage. The Wall Street Journal reported that the ban followed discussions between Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and senior Trump administration officials, with Amazon raising concerns about security risks.

Founded in 2021, Anthropic has quickly become a major player in the AI sector, raising over $7 billion in funding from investors including Amazon and Google. The company employs more than 500 people and is known for its focus on AI safety and transparency. Its Claude models are widely used by enterprises and developers worldwide.
