A new Pew Research Center report says almost one in ten web pages are now written or edited by AI. The real challenge is measuring how much of this content is actually meaningful.

The rapid growth of AI-generated material is reshaping the online landscape. According to new data from the Pew Research Center, nearly 10% of all web content has now been significantly edited or written by artificial intelligence. This marks a tenfold increase since OpenAI released ChatGPT to the public four years ago, with the share rising from about 1% to 9.6%.

At the current pace, projections suggest that AI could be responsible for the majority of web content by the end of this decade. However, even as adoption rates may eventually slow, the volume of content produced with AI tools continues to accelerate. The analogy to social media is instructive: while user growth on major platforms has plateaued, the sheer amount of content-now often AI-assisted-keeps expanding.

The central question for publishers and editors is not just when AI will dominate content creation, but how to assess the value and relevance of this synthetic material. As AI-generated content proliferates, distinguishing what is truly meaningful becomes more complex. Concerns include AI's tendency to distort meaning, whether through hallucinations, misinformation, or the biases embedded in its training data. Since most AI models rely on digitally accessible sources, there is an inherent bias against information that exists only offline, potentially excluding a vast amount of real-world knowledge.

Even within digital sources, significant information remains inaccessible to most AI systems, especially proprietary or paywalled data. This raises the classic issue of 'garbage in, garbage out'-the quality of AI output is only as strong as the data it can access. For publishers, this means that much of the most influential or accurate information may not be reflected in AI-generated content.

Despite these challenges, the rise of synthetic content is not inherently negative. There is potential for AI to enhance relevance and efficiency when used thoughtfully by skilled professionals. However, the industry lacks robust tools to measure the meaningfulness of the growing volume of AI-driven content. Drawing inspiration from Havas's 'Meaningful Brands' research-which found that only 22% of brands are considered meaningful by consumers-there is a need for similar frameworks to evaluate the societal value of information, whether synthetic, human-created, or hybrid.

Transparency and human oversight remain critical as AI becomes more embedded in editorial workflows.
