RTL and ProSieben Capture Young Viewers During Free-TV World Cup Pause

With the World Cup off free TV, Sunday night saw RTL and ProSieben win over younger audiences. Competing films outperformed rivals as public broadcasters led overall viewership. Audience data reveals shifting attention.

Sunday night brought a rare opportunity for commercial broadcasters as the World Cup was absent from free TV, leaving Magenta TV as the only platform airing the Brazil vs. Norway match. This shift allowed RTL and ProSieben to compete for prime-time dominance among younger viewers, with both channels seeing notable gains in the 14-49 demographic.

In total audience numbers, 'Polizeiruf 110' on Das Erste led the evening, drawing 4.40 million viewers and a 21.0% market share. ZDF followed with 'Inga Lindström: Klang der Sehnsucht,' attracting 3.24 million and a 15.5% share. The day's overall winner was the 8 p.m. 'Tagesschau,' which reached 5.42 million viewers and a 26.2% share.

RTL's 'Das Vermächtnis des Geheimen Buches' secured 1.47 million viewers and a 7.3% share, ranking 16th in the daily charts. ProSieben's 'The Tomorrow War' drew 0.99 million and a strong 5.1%, while Sat.1's 'Wunder' reached 0.77 million and 3.8%. In the key 14-49 age group, RTL edged out ProSieben with 0.40 million viewers (11.3%) versus 0.36 million (10.2%). 'Polizeiruf 110: Diebe' placed third in this segment with 0.30 million and 8.5%, but Das Erste's 'Tagesschau' led the day among younger viewers with 0.74 million and a 21.7% share.

Other notable results included Sat.1's 'Wunder' (0.29 million, 8.2%), Vox's 'Hot oder Schrott - Promi Spezial' (0.24 million, 7.0%), Kabel Eins's 'Trucker Babes' (0.19 million, 5.4%), ZDF's 'Inga Lindström: Klang der Sehnsucht' (0.18 million, 5.2%), and RTL Zwei's 'Which Brings me to you' (0.09 million, 2.7%).

Saturday's prime time was dominated by the World Cup, with the Canada vs. Morocco match on ZDF drawing 5.32 million viewers and a 31.2% share. Das Erste's 'Kreta-Krimi: Tod in der Bucht' attracted 3.68 million (19.4%). Later, 'Der Dänemark-Krimi' (2.02 million) narrowly beat ZDF's 'Erzgebirgskrimi' (1.96 million). RTL was the only private channel to enter the top 25 with 'Cindy aus Marzahn - 20 Jahre Pink' (0.77 million, 4.2%). Among 14-49-year-olds, the World Cup match reached 1.22 million and a 43.7% share, while 'Erzgebirgskrimi' led non-sports programming in this group.

Friday night saw similar trends, with the Australia vs. Egypt World Cup match on ZDF attracting 5.46 million viewers (29.4%). Das Erste's 'Nord bei Nordwest: Wilde Hunde' held 3.24 million (17.2%). Private broadcasters struggled to break into the top 25, with RTL's 'Die ultimative Chart Show' (0.69 million, 4.1%) and Sat.1's '99 - Wer schlägt sie alle?' (0.65 million, 3.5%) falling short. In the 14-49 segment, the World Cup again led with 1.33 million viewers (43.3%). ProSieben's 'Ready Player One' was the best-performing film among private channels in this group.

While Magenta TV's exclusive World Cup broadcasts drew attention, audience figures for these matches remain undisclosed. This lack of data leaves a gap in understanding total video consumption for the weekend, especially as streaming and digital platforms continue to fragment viewership.
