PubMatic Shifts Web Wrapper to Playwire, Doubles Down on SDK

A major ad-tech provider is moving its Prebid web wrapper to Playwire. The company will keep supporting its OpenWrap SDK for mobile apps. This signals a sharper focus on mobile app monetization.

PubMatic is moving away from managing its own Prebid web wrapper for publishers, instead recommending Playwire as the new partner for the 250 publishers currently using its OpenWrap Web integration. For digital media and publishing professionals, this change highlights a shift in where PubMatic sees the most growth and strategic value: mobile app monetization rather than open web header bidding.

According to John Martin, PubMatic’s VP of publisher growth solutions, the need for in-house wrapper technology has faded as third-party specialists now dominate this space. He noted that several years ago, helping publishers with header bidding integrations was a core service, but today, publishers have more options and less need for a single provider’s wrapper tech. PubMatic’s decision to hand off its wrapper to Playwire, a company previously seen as a competitor, reflects this evolution.

While the transition is expected to have minimal revenue impact, it signals a broader industry trend: the open web’s growth opportunities may be slowing, while mobile app monetization is accelerating. PubMatic will continue to support its OpenWrap SDK, which serves between 750 and 1,000 app publishers-significantly more than the web wrapper’s user base. Martin emphasized that the SDK is now far more strategic for PubMatic, as it is essential for accessing and monetizing in-app ad inventory.

Playwire CEO Jayson Dubin described the move as a matter of company focus. He said that while PubMatic operates across multiple channels and revenue streams, Playwire’s primary business is publisher page monetization. From a revenue-to-opportunity perspective, it made sense for PubMatic to step back from managing the Prebid web wrapper and let a specialist take over.

For publishers, the change means that their choice of wrapper will not limit their access to web inventory, as PubMatic can still participate regardless of the wrapper in use. However, the SDK remains a critical gateway for in-app advertising, providing PubMatic with exclusive access to data and supply that the web wrapper does not. Martin noted that many publishers have already switched wrappers multiple times since header bidding became standard, and that new agentic solutions are being developed without relying on wrappers. In contrast, the SDK remains the bridge to mobile app monetization.

This strategic realignment echoes broader shifts in digital publishing, where companies are re-evaluating their technology stacks to focus on areas with the highest growth potential. Similar to how Lodestar Media streamlined its editorial workflows and doubled pageviews by syndicating evergreen content, as reported in a recent case study, PubMatic’s move reflects a targeted approach to technology investment and operational focus.

PubMatic has confirmed it has no plans to sunset its OpenWrap SDK, as it is essential for the company’s ability to see and monetize in-app ad supply. The SDK remains central to PubMatic’s mobile strategy, while the web wrapper handoff allows the company to concentrate resources where it sees the most opportunity.
