Staff at ProPublica ratified a four-year contract with significant pay increases, AI transparency requirements, hybrid work safeguards, and health-care savings. The agreement marks a milestone for the newsroom’s union.
ProPublica employees represented by the NewsGuild of New York have ratified their first union contract, delivering notable gains for staff across editorial and business roles. The four-year agreement, approved on the third anniversary of the union’s recognition, includes pay raises of up to 24% over the contract’s duration, new requirements for transparency around the use of artificial intelligence, protections for hybrid work arrangements, and substantial health-care cost savings.
The ProPublica Guild, which covers more than 150 staff members including reporters, video journalists, development professionals, and copy editors, overwhelmingly supported the deal in a vote held Friday. The contract is designed to address key concerns raised by union members during negotiations, particularly around compensation, workplace flexibility, and the impact of emerging technologies on editorial operations.
According to Agnel Philip, a data reporter and unit chair of the ProPublica Guild, the agreement reflects the collective effort of union members and demonstrates the results that can be achieved through organized bargaining. The contract’s provisions on AI transparency are intended to ensure that staff are informed about how artificial intelligence is used in newsroom processes, while hybrid work protections aim to preserve flexible work options established during recent years.
Health-care savings negotiated in the contract are expected to provide meaningful financial relief for employees, further strengthening the newsroom’s ability to attract and retain talent. The ratification of this contract marks a significant step for ProPublica’s unionized workforce as they continue to navigate changes in the digital media landscape.
