A new 'Source Group' field now streamlines traffic source analysis. Updated classifications and hostname filters aim to improve reporting accuracy. These changes help marketers better track campaign performance.
Google Analytics has introduced a new field called “Source Group” designed to simplify the analysis of traffic sources. This update brings refreshed “Source Platform” values, making it easier for users to evaluate where their website visitors originate.
The new “Source Group” concept consolidates multiple source values from major online platforms—such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok—into a single, unified label. For example, all traffic from Facebook, regardless of how it is named (“facebook”, “fb”, or “Meta-facebook”), will now be grouped under “Facebook.” This change is intended to improve the accuracy of performance analysis and attribution by eliminating inconsistencies in source naming.
In addition, Google Analytics has updated and refined the existing “Source Platform” classifications to align with the new “Source Group” structure. These improvements are aimed at providing more consistent and actionable reporting for marketers and analysts.
Another notable enhancement is the introduction of hostname-based filters within the “Data Filters” section of the admin panel. This new filter type allows users to include or exclude data based on the hostname, offering greater control over which traffic is analyzed and reported.
