OpenAI has introduced a significant update to ChatGPT's voice mode, unveiling a new model called GPT-Live-1 that is designed to make conversations with the AI feel more like speaking with another person. The company says the upgrade will allow users to speak more naturally, as the system now interrupts less frequently and waits for users to finish their thoughts, even if they pause mid-sentence.
During a press briefing, OpenAI research lead Kundan Kumar described GPT-Live-1 as the company's "smartest voice model" to date. The new system can automatically route user queries to advanced text models, such as GPT-5.5, when deeper reasoning or web search is required. This enables the AI to quickly shift from researching a topic to discussing its findings in real time.
The enhanced voice mode is intended to create smoother, more human-like interactions, addressing previous complaints about abrupt interruptions and unnatural pacing. OpenAI says the improvements are part of its ongoing effort to make AI assistants more responsive and intuitive for everyday users.
