Major publishers have been approached about licensing news for Siri AI. Apple is reportedly considering a nine-figure budget. The new compensation model could reshape how news is used in AI assistants.

Media and publishing professionals may soon see a new revenue stream as Apple explores licensing deals with news publishers to supply content for its upgraded Siri AI assistant. According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple has initiated talks with several publishers, proposing payments starting at $100 million to access timely news and information for Siri's next iteration.

Sources told the Journal that Apple is considering a nine-figure budget for these agreements. The company aims to integrate up-to-date news into Siri AI, which is expected to launch publicly later this year after being first announced in 2024. Early beta feedback suggests the revamped assistant is a notable improvement over previous versions.

Apple's proposal reportedly includes a "variable compensation plan" for publishers. Under this model, payments would be made only when Siri AI actually uses a publisher's content, rather than through fixed-fee arrangements. This approach would mark a shift from other AI licensing deals, which often grant broad access to content for a set price. Apple already uses a similar pay-as-you-go system for Apple News+, compensating publishers based on the share of clicks their content generates within the platform.

As AI-powered assistants become more central to content distribution, the structure of these licensing deals could influence how publishers monetize their work and protect their intellectual property. For context, recent analysis has highlighted the growing economic impact of AI agents, with projections that consumer spending driven by such technologies could reach trillions by 2030, as discussed in a related report on AI agent-driven consumer spend.

Apple, founded in 1976 and headquartered in Cupertino, California, is one of the world's most valuable technology companies. As of 2025, Apple reported annual revenues exceeding $400 billion and employed more than 160,000 people globally. The company’s services division, which includes Apple News+, has become a significant contributor to its overall growth and profitability.
