User behavior is shifting as AI-generated responses in Google search results surge from 15% to 43% in one year. Publishers face mounting traffic losses as more queries are resolved without site visits. New data reveals how this trend is accelerating.

AI-powered answers have rapidly become a central feature of Google Search, with a new Similarweb study showing that the share of queries returning AI-generated responses has soared from 15% to 43% over the past year. This shift is fundamentally changing how users interact with search engines, as more people now consume information directly within Google’s platform rather than clicking through to external websites.

According to TechCrunch, AI Overviews are no longer just an optional add-on-they are now embedded in the core search experience. After receiving a concise AI summary, users increasingly continue their research in AI Mode, which has seen its monthly visits jump from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026. This rapid adoption highlights how AI-driven features are reshaping the search landscape.

The expansion of AI capabilities is also altering the way people phrase their queries. Similarweb’s analysis indicates that searches are becoming longer and more conversational, moving away from short keyword strings. At the same time, Google is more frequently serving as the final destination for information, providing answers based on indexed content without requiring users to visit the original sites.

This trend is putting significant pressure on publishers, especially news organizations, who are experiencing a steady decline in referral traffic from search. In response, companies like Cloudflare have introduced tools to restrict AI bots’ access to content or to offer it only behind a paywall. Meanwhile, Similarweb reports that the number of AI answers containing source links has increased more than fivefold in the past year.

Despite this growth, as of May 2026, only 6.8% of queries-particularly those directed at ChatGPT-included source links. However, following a recent update to Google’s search results, the share of AI answers with citations rose from about 25% in March to nearly 60% by the end of May. Still, Similarweb concludes that this does not reverse the broader trend: Google is steadily evolving from a gateway to external sites into a self-contained platform where users get most of the information they need.

These developments echo broader shifts in the search ecosystem, as explored in an analysis of AI’s impact on local SEO strategies, where AI-driven recommendations are also changing how businesses and publishers reach audiences.

Founded in 1998, Google remains the world’s dominant search engine, processing over 8.5 billion searches per day as of 2026. The company’s ongoing investment in AI and machine learning has positioned it at the forefront of search innovation, with its AI Overviews and related features now reaching hundreds of millions of users each month. Google’s parent company, Alphabet, reported annual revenues exceeding $300 billion in 2025, with search and advertising continuing to drive the majority of its business.
