X Rolls Out Video Editor to Boost Original Creator Content

New video editing tools arrive on X, aiming to help creators publish original videos and reduce reposted material. The update introduces caption overlays, green-screen features, and more.

Creators on X now have access to new video editing and recording features designed to encourage the publication of original content and limit the spread of recycled videos. The platform’s latest update introduces tools such as multi-language caption overlays with customizable styles and green-screen effects that let users add backgrounds from their camera roll or other X posts.

Nikita Bier, head of product at X, stated that supporting original content creation and rewarding creators is a top priority for the company. Bier noted that many high-performing posts on X still rely on material that was originally published elsewhere, sometimes years after it first went viral. The new video editor is intended to make it easier for creators to produce unique videos that do not exist on other platforms.

The update, currently available in the iOS app, includes long-requested features like customizable captions and green-screen backgrounds. Bier indicated that additional enhancements to the video editor are planned in the coming weeks. However, he acknowledged that simply providing editing tools will not fully address the issue of recycled content, especially since viral reposts can generate real revenue for users.

For X to become a primary platform for exclusive creator content, it will need to offer more incentives and improve its creator relations. Bier recently criticized MrBeast, one of YouTube’s most prominent creators, for the style of his videos, highlighting ongoing tensions between platforms. X also lacks robust tools for creators to report stolen content or monetize attribution, unlike Meta’s Reels or YouTube’s long-standing copyright systems.

Another major challenge for X is its persistent bot problem. Bier reported that in April, X was suspending over 200 bots per minute, with half the product team focused on anti-spam features. Bots not only inflate view counts but also contribute to content theft and spam, complicating efforts to build a healthy creator ecosystem.

Bier emphasized that video posts already account for nearly half of all impressions on X, making the new editor a significant move for the platform’s user experience and business. The company’s efforts to address spam and support original content reflect broader industry challenges, as other platforms like Reddit are also deploying AI tools to combat spam and bot-generated material. The new video editor and recorder are currently exclusive to iOS, as the Android version of the app is still under development.
