A new content series spotlights collaboration between WPP Media and partner companies. The debut episode features a candid discussion with The Trade Desk CEO. Industry tensions and agency relationships take center stage.

WPP Media has introduced 'Made Together,' a content series designed to showcase how the company collaborates with key partners to drive innovation and growth for client brands. The first episode, released today, features WPP Media CEO Brian Lesser in conversation with The Trade Desk Founder and CEO Jeff Green, focusing on the dynamics of their partnership and the broader challenges facing the ad-tech sector.

The timing of this launch follows a high-profile dispute earlier this year between The Trade Desk and Publicis Groupe. Publicis accused The Trade Desk of failing an audit, breaching their master agreement, charging undisclosed fees, and enrolling clients in media buys without consent. The Trade Desk denied these allegations, but the conflict led Publicis to temporarily advise clients against using The Trade Desk's platform. Last month, both companies announced they had resolved their differences, with Publicis once again recommending The Trade Desk to its clients, though neither side disclosed further details.

This public disagreement sparked debate across the industry about transparency and trust in programmatic advertising. Kamran Asghar, Founder and CEO of Crossmedia, commented in a MediaPost column that the situation was less about assigning blame and more about clarifying how the system operates for all stakeholders.

During the 'Made Together' episode, Lesser asked Green whether The Trade Desk is misunderstood in the market. Green responded that he believes the company is often mischaracterized, despite its consistent mission and messaging. He emphasized that The Trade Desk's success is closely tied to its agency partnerships, stating that serving major global brands is only possible through collaboration with agencies. Green contrasted this approach with other demand-side platforms (DSPs) that have signaled intentions to bypass agencies, reiterating that The Trade Desk exclusively represents buyers and avoids conflicts of interest by not operating as an ad network.

Green and Lesser also discussed the importance of supporting an open internet and maintaining the principles that guided their early partnership. Lesser expressed appreciation for the ongoing collaboration, noting that the values discussed today align with those present when The Trade Desk was founded.

When asked about the value of the WPP Media-The Trade Desk relationship, Green highlighted their shared recognition that integration and holistic thinking-driven in part by advances in AI-are essential for agencies and advertisers. He pointed to the combination of robust data, effective measurement, and mutual trust as key ingredients for successful outcomes.
