A sudden drop in Reddit’s presence among ChatGPT Search citations has been recorded, with its share falling from 3.83% to just 0.52% in mid-August. The shift, tracked by Promptwatch, highlights how quickly AI platforms can alter their source preferences.
Reddit’s visibility in ChatGPT Search results has sharply declined, according to new data from Promptwatch. Between August 14 and August 17, Reddit’s share of citations in ChatGPT Search responses dropped from an average of 3.83% to just 0.52%, marking an 86.4% decrease in only four days. This abrupt change followed a period of relative stability that lasted several weeks, as reported by the AI visibility monitoring platform.
Promptwatch’s analysis shows that Reddit consistently accounted for about 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 through August 7. However, on August 8, the first signs of a decline appeared, coinciding with a reported change in ChatGPT Search’s query fan-out behavior. Reddit’s citation share slipped from the high 3% range to the mid-2% range, then experienced a more dramatic drop below 1% on August 14, averaging just 0.52% through August 17.
The data highlights when the shift occurred but does not explain the underlying cause. Promptwatch notes that the findings are provisional and ongoing monitoring is underway to determine whether the change is due to a lasting adjustment in source selection or a potential data collection issue.
This pattern appears unique to ChatGPT. Promptwatch found no similar one-day drop in Reddit citations within Google’s AI products. Instead, Reddit’s share in Google AI Overviews declined gradually from about 2.5% in early July to around 2.1% in August. Google AI Mode also showed a steady, modest decrease in Reddit citations starting at the end of July and continuing over the following weeks.
The analysis specifically tracks Reddit’s share of AI citations, not the underlying algorithms or systems. It cannot determine why Reddit is appearing less frequently in ChatGPT Search results or whether this signals a permanent shift in how sources are selected by the platform.
For publishers and content creators, the rapid change in Reddit’s AI search visibility serves as a reminder that citation trends can shift without warning. AI platforms have long surfaced Reddit as a top-cited source, but these platforms can alter their citation patterns quickly, impacting referral traffic and visibility. Monitoring your own AI referral and citation data remains essential.
Promptwatch’s findings are based on millions of AI-generated responses collected from the live interfaces of major AI platforms. The reported charts measure Reddit’s share among responses that included at least one citation. For those interested in broader AI transparency efforts, invisible watermarking in AI-generated text is also being adopted by other platforms, as seen in recent updates to Claude AI’s output.
