OpenAI’s Ad Revenue Forecast Faces Major Shortfall, Analyst Finds

Projected ad earnings for OpenAI are set to fall far below expectations. Analysts say the company’s ambitious targets may be out of reach. The gap could reshape how publishers view AI-driven ad models.

Whose who uses AI monetization should note a significant gap between OpenAI’s ad revenue projections and current analyst estimates. According to Emarketer, OpenAI’s ad business is expected to miss its own five-year revenue forecast by 90%.

OpenAI had set a target of $2.5 billion in ad revenue for this year, with a long-term goal of reaching $100 billion by 2030. However, Emarketer’s data suggests that standalone chatbots in the U.S.-including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot app, Google AI Mode, and Amazon Alexa for Shopping-will collectively generate less than $1 billion in ad revenue this year. By 2030, that figure is projected to reach only $5.41 billion, far below OpenAI’s stated ambitions.

The company began testing ads in February and publicly promoted its revenue forecasts just two months later. Emarketer’s analysis indicates that these projections rely on OpenAI capturing a large share of search ad budgets, dominating a fully developed chatbot ad market, and outperforming all previous ad formats simultaneously-assumptions the analyst views as highly optimistic.

This skepticism around AI-driven ad models echoes concerns raised in other areas of digital advertising. For example, some industry experts have questioned whether automation in agentic advertising will truly eliminate intermediaries or simply recreate existing complexities, as discussed in a recent analysis of agentic advertising’s challenges.

OpenAI, founded in 2015, has rapidly expanded its product offerings and partnerships, including collaborations with Microsoft and other major tech companies. The company’s valuation reportedly surpassed $80 billion in 2025, reflecting strong investor interest in generative AI. Despite these milestones, the latest analyst data suggests that OpenAI’s ad revenue ambitions may require a significant recalibration to align with current market realities.
