Sponsored product ads now appear in Kroger's AI shopping assistant. Advertisers gain new placements across Kroger's digital platforms. The move leverages first-party data for measurable results.

Kroger Precision Marketing has introduced product listing ads as sponsored placements within Kroger's AI-powered shopping assistant. This update gives advertisers a direct way to reach shoppers as they build lists or seek meal inspiration, with sponsored products now appearing alongside organic results in the assistant's interface.

The new ad placements are clearly marked as sponsored content and are available across the Kroger Family of Companies' websites and apps. When users interact with the AI assistant-such as asking for snack ideas or recipes-relevant product listing ads from active Search & Browse PLA campaigns may be displayed. These ads are automatically included for advertisers running this campaign type, requiring no extra setup or bidding adjustments.

Advertisers can use Kroger Precision Marketing's report builder to analyze the performance of Shopping Assistant product listing ads separately from other inventory. This granular reporting aims to help brands understand the impact of their sponsored placements within the AI-driven shopping experience.

During Kroger's June earnings call, CEO Greg Foran highlighted that 95% of the company's transactions are linked to a loyalty card, supported by over two decades of purchase history. Foran described Kroger Precision Marketing as a high-margin business built on first-party data, emphasizing its value to brands and advertisers seeking to measure actual purchase behavior rather than intent. He also noted that data is becoming the most valuable currency in advertising.

Kroger Precision Marketing's retail media network is estimated to generate less than $5 million in annual revenue, but it is viewed as a growing stream that helps offset price reductions for the parent company. While detailed revenue figures are not typically disclosed, the unit reportedly achieved profit growth exceeding 20% in the first quarter of 2026.

This move follows a broader trend of retailers and platforms expanding direct ad opportunities for brands. For example, recent collaboration between PubMatic and Zynga has enabled advertisers to reach mobile gamers more directly through new in-game ad pathways.

Kroger, founded in 1883, is one of the largest grocery retailers in the United States, operating nearly 2,800 stores across the country. The company has invested heavily in digital transformation and retail media, leveraging its extensive loyalty program and first-party data to drive targeted advertising and new revenue streams. Kroger Precision Marketing, launched in 2017, continues to expand its offerings as brands seek measurable, data-driven ways to connect with shoppers online.
