NFL fans can now follow live games, get real-time updates, and access fantasy football features directly in Google Search on mobile. The move puts new pressure on publishers and advertisers competing for sports traffic.

Google has launched a live NFL game feed inside Search for mobile users in the United States. As the 2026 NFL season begins, fans can now see play-by-play updates, video highlights, and AI-generated insights without leaving the search results. This change puts Google in direct competition with sports publishers and media outlets that rely on live traffic and engagement.

When someone searches for an active NFL game, a red “Live” icon appears. Tapping it opens a timeline with instant recaps, social commentary, and key video clips as the game happens. According to an official Google announcement, the feed offers a summary, timeline, and highlights-all within the search page. This could pull significant mobile traffic away from independent sports sites and fantasy platforms, especially during major games.

To activate the Live Game Feed, users must search for an ongoing NFL match and tap the red Live icon, which then displays a real-time summary and key moments from the game.

Google has also added a carousel that lets fans check scores from across the league in one place, so there’s no need for multiple searches. As reported by 9to5Google, this feature is available worldwide on mobile, allowing users to follow several games at once. For fantasy football players, Google now lets users link their Yahoo Fantasy or Sleeper accounts to Search. With AI Mode, fans get lineup suggestions and draft feedback before games start. Secure linking pulls in live roster data and delivers personalized insights, all within Google’s platform.

This rollout is a clear move to keep users inside Google during the busiest moments of the NFL season. By combining live sports data, social reactions, and fantasy tools, Google is shaping how fans follow games and how advertisers reach them. The platform now offers advertisers a direct way to target fans with real-time game data and personal fantasy information.

Right now, the Live NFL Game Feed is only available in English and only on mobile devices in the US. Google says it will add support for college teams and more regions later this month, as detailed in the Google Blog announcement. In a related update, Ohio State President Ravi Bellamkonda told CNBC’s Squawk Box that the university will work with Google to open a space in the Innovation District, using Google’s AI for education projects. This points to Google’s wider plans to bring AI and live data into both consumer and institutional settings.

The new football features in Google Search were introduced at the start of the 2026 NFL regular season, with Google stating the goal is to provide deeper coverage of every moment of the game without leaving the search results page.

For publishers, the impact is immediate. Google’s delivery of live sports content and fantasy features threatens to draw both traffic and engagement away from independent sites, especially those that depend on real-time search and fantasy partnerships. Google’s ability to offer live, interactive experiences inside Search raises expectations for what audiences want-and what publishers must provide to keep up. As Google brings together search, live events, and AI-powered personalization, the competition for sports media and digital advertising is shifting quickly. Publishers who don’t adapt may lose ground as Google becomes both the gatekeeper and the main destination for live sports coverage.
