A court document has reignited speculation about a potential Fox Corp. and News Corp. merger. Executives say no talks are underway, but past attempts faced strong resistance. Investors and family members remain cautious.
Media executives and publishing professionals are watching closely as Fox Corp. once again finds itself at the center of merger speculation with News Corp. A recently released court document from June revealed that Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch’s attorney acknowledged the possibility of a future recombination between Fox and News Corp. This disclosure has prompted renewed attention from those tracking major shifts in media ownership and strategy.
In response to questions from Television News Daily, a Fox representative clarified that the court references were related to a potential merger considered in 2022. The spokesperson emphasized that there have been no merger discussions between Fox and News Corp. since that time. Despite this, the topic remains relevant for publishers and investors, given the scale and influence of both companies in the media landscape.
In 2023, Lachlan Murdoch and Rupert Murdoch attempted to re-merge Fox Corp. and News Corp., a decade after the original split. However, the effort was met with opposition from institutional investors and members of the Murdoch family, who argued that a merger could diminish shareholder value for both entities. This resistance ultimately halted the process, leaving the companies to continue operating independently.
The original separation occurred in 2013, when Rupert Murdoch’s media empire divided into two publicly traded companies: 21st Century Fox, focused on entertainment and broadcasting, and News Corp., which retained publishing assets such as The Wall Street Journal and The New York Post. In 2019, Fox underwent further transformation, selling a significant portion of its business-including its movie studio, several cable networks, and a 30% stake in Hulu-to Walt Disney for $71.3 billion. The current Fox Corp. portfolio includes the Fox Television Network, owned TV stations, Fox News Channel, Fox Business, and Fox Sports.
More recently, Fox Corp. agreed to a $22 billion deal to acquire Roku, a major streaming platform with access to approximately 100 million monthly active U.S. streaming users. This move signals Fox’s ongoing efforts to expand its digital distribution and audience reach, even as questions about its corporate structure persist.
