Major brands are targeting Gen Z college students with a new Amazon Ads campaign. The initiative blends shoppable content, influencer storytelling, and on-campus experiences. A livestreamed concert headlines the effort.
Amazon Ads is rolling out a multi-platform back-to-school campaign designed to connect brands like Gatorade, Michael Kors, and SharkNinja with Gen Z students heading to college. The campaign, called 'First Day Ready,' integrates shoppable content, creator-driven storytelling, immersive campus storefronts, and a live concert experience to drive both brand engagement and direct commerce.
The campaign’s centerpiece is a livestreamed Kane Brown concert at the University of Wisconsin, scheduled for September 5. The event will be broadcast across Prime Video, Amazon Music, Twitch, Fire TV, and Samsung TV, aiming to reach students both on campus and online. Amazon Ads’ Brand Innovation Lab led the creative development, launching the campaign on July 1 with custom video spots, influencer content, and dedicated brand store pages on Amazon.com. These digital storefronts are inspired by campus environments such as dorm rooms, quads, and fitness centers, allowing students to explore and shop in settings that mirror their college experience.
Amazon Ads structured the campaign to merge brand-building and commerce into a single, measurable experience. According to Kate McCagg, global head of Amazon Ads Brand Innovation Lab, the approach enables brands to participate in moments that span streaming, creator content, physical activations, and live events, all linked back to purchase opportunities and unified measurement.
As students arrive on campus, the campaign transitions from digital to physical with a block party at the University of Wisconsin. Each participating brand operates its own themed storefront. Gatorade recreates a college tailgate atmosphere, complete with a backyard bag toss featuring Propel powders. Michael Kors transforms its space into a Jet Set Lounge, offering a giant inflatable handbag, a photo booth, and a charm bar where students can personalize their look and collect Michael Kors charms as giveaways. The event’s layout encourages students to move between storefronts, engaging with games, sampling, and creator-led moments before reaching the main concert stage.
The campaign leverages Amazon’s Influences package to amplify brand visibility and engagement through premium creator content. Distribution spans Fire TV, gateway placements, streaming TV, and Prime Video, ensuring broad reach across Amazon’s ecosystem. This approach reflects a growing trend among major platforms to blend digital and physical experiences for deeper audience engagement. For example, recent changes in monetization requirements on YouTube, as discussed in coverage of YouTube’s updated Partner Program thresholds, highlight how platforms are evolving to prioritize new forms of content and audience interaction.
