Android users now have access to a rebuilt X app. The year-long project aims to speed up feature launches and improve user experience. Some features are still being finalized. The update follows a surge in Android downloads.
Media and publishing professionals tracking platform updates should note that X has completed a full rebuild of its Android app, a move positioned to accelerate feature development and enhance the mobile experience for Android users. Nikita Bier, head of product at X, described the year-long engineering effort as one of the company’s largest since Elon Musk acquired Twitter in 2022.
The new app, built from the ground up, is intended to deliver a smoother experience for Android users and enable X to launch new features more quickly. Bier indicated that Android will now often receive new capabilities before other platforms. However, the engineering team is still working to restore certain features, such as the ability to host Spaces and improved performance on older Android devices. Bier acknowledged that some aspects of the app remain unfinished.
The decision to prioritize the Android rebuild followed a sharp increase in downloads on the platform last year. With Elon Musk’s stated ambition to transform X into an “everything app” similar to WeChat, the company sees a robust Android app as critical, given Android’s dominance among global smartphone users.
This overhaul comes as X seeks to recover from reputational challenges, including a reduced content moderation team, increased harmful content, advertiser boycotts, user losses, and national bans. Recent product launches like X Chat and X Money, along with new creator incentives and video tools, reflect the company’s broader push to expand its platform capabilities and attract both users and creators.
The rebuilt Android app is now available for download on the Google Play Store.
Founded in 2006 as Twitter, X was acquired by Elon Musk in 2022 and rebranded in 2023. The platform reported over 500 million monthly active users in 2025, with Android devices accounting for the majority of global smartphone usage. X continues to invest in new features and monetization tools as it competes for audience and creator attention worldwide.
