A surge of 250 new unicorns has emerged in 2026, outpacing last year’s total. Major players like Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures, and Y Combinator are leading the charge. Find out which sectors and investors are dominating the latest funding wave.

Venture capital’s most prominent names are driving a historic wave of unicorn creation in 2026, with 250 companies reaching billion-dollar valuations by August 15-far surpassing the 193 unicorns minted in 2025. Sectors leading this year’s boom include robotics, AI labs, healthcare and biotech, financial services, AI infrastructure, and AI deployment.

According to Crunchbase data, Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures, and Y Combinator have emerged as the most active investors in this year’s unicorn cohort. The Crunchbase Unicorn Board tracks these trends, revealing that 56% of new unicorns are headquartered in the United States, while 19% are based in China.

Funding activity has accelerated sharply: 75% of all capital raised by these companies-$74 billion out of $98 billion-was secured in 2026 alone. This year also saw the highest annual deal count to date, with 329 transactions, though many companies began raising earlier, with seed rounds dating back to 2012 and Series A rounds starting in 2014.

The top 10 most active investors by deal count in this unicorn class are Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures, Y Combinator, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Lux Capital, General Catalyst, and BoxGroup. Y Combinator stands out as the only accelerator in the top tier, while BoxGroup is the sole seed-focused investor to make the list.

Among Asian investors, HSG (formerly Sequoia Capital China) is notable for its presence, operating from Hong Kong and across China. Private equity firms like Valor Equity Partners and Thrive Capital also feature prominently, alongside corporate venture arms such as Google Ventures, Nvidia, and NVentures.

Seed and Early-Stage Leaders

Y Combinator and Sequoia Capital hold the largest portfolios of seed-stage unicorns, each backing companies with initial investments of $20 million or less. BoxGroup, based in New York, ranks third in seed portfolio size despite investing in fewer companies and managing smaller funds than its larger peers.

Soma Capital has five seed-stage unicorns in its portfolio, while South Park Commons, Lux Capital, and Founders Fund each have four. Lux Capital and Founders Fund share three companies in common among their seed investments, highlighting significant crossover at the earliest stages.

Series A Investment Trends

Andreessen Horowitz leads as the most active Series A investor, with Khosla Ventures, Spark Capital, and Sequoia Capital each tied at six Series A deals. Series A round sizes vary widely, from $6 million to $500 million, with larger rounds more common at certain firms, including Ant Group, Founders Fund, and Bessemer Venture Partners.

As unicorn creation and valuations accelerate, established multistage firms with deep resources and early-stage access dominate the rankings. Only a handful of accelerators, seed specialists, corporate investors, private equity, and Asia-based firms break into the top group of unicorn backers.

The next challenge for these newly minted unicorns will be converting rapid capital inflows and high valuations into sustainable, category-defining businesses.

Sequoia Capital, founded in 1972 and headquartered in Menlo Park, California, is one of the world’s most influential venture capital firms. The company manages multiple funds with billions in assets under management and has backed industry-defining companies such as Apple, Google, and Airbnb. Sequoia’s continued leadership in unicorn investments underscores its enduring impact on the global startup ecosystem.
