The Independent Relaunches Main Stage to Boost UK Grassroots Venues

Eight grassroots music venues across the UK will be spotlighted this summer. The Independent and Music Venue Trust are providing editorial coverage and advertising support. Each venue receives £5,000 in advertising and promotional assets.

Media professionals tracking audience engagement and content partnerships will note The Independent's decision to revive its Main Stage initiative in collaboration with the Music Venue Trust. This move aims to elevate emerging artists and grassroots music venues (GMVs) throughout the UK, with a focus on editorial visibility and direct advertising support.

The publisher confirmed that, starting in 2024, Main Stage will highlight eight different GMVs over the summer, featuring a new venue every two weeks. Each selected venue will receive dedicated editorial coverage in The Independent, £5,000 in advertising from the publisher, and promotional assets for use on their own channels to amplify their Main Stage status.

The first venue to be featured is Dubrek Studios, located in Derby city center. Originally established as a recording and rehearsal space, Dubrek Studios has evolved into a key player in Derby's underground music scene, supporting new artists for over 15 years and fostering a community-driven environment.

Following Dubrek Studios, the initiative will spotlight Lubber Fiend in Newcastle, recognized for its volunteer-led operations and support for alternative and underground music; Pealie's Barn in Northallerton, which brings live music to rural North Yorkshire; and Voodoo Daddy's in Norwich, known for its diverse live music programming and commitment to emerging talent.

Roisin O’Connor, music editor at The Independent, stated that supporting grassroots music spaces is essential for nurturing future headline acts and emphasized the publisher's commitment to championing the teams behind these venues. Mark Davyd, founder and CEO of the Music Venue Trust, described the Main Stage initiative as a vital platform for documenting the experiences of live music communities across the UK, especially during challenging times for the sector.
