Two leading German health insurers have shifted their media budgets. Omnicom Media agencies now manage both accounts. The move comes during a major restructuring phase.

Media and publishing professionals tracking agency shifts in Germany’s health sector will note a significant development: Omnicom Media now manages the media budgets for the country’s two largest health insurance providers. After OMD secured the AOK-Bundesverband account, PHD-another Omnicom Media agency-has won the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) media mandate.

The TK account was put out for public tender in fall of last year. For over a decade, the Hamburg-based agency pilot had held and repeatedly defended this business. This time, however, pilot was unable to retain the account. According to TK, PHD will now handle all aspects of the media mandate, including consulting, planning, optimization, and buying.

With both the AOK-Bundesverband and TK accounts now under Omnicom Media’s management, the agency group oversees media for the two largest German health insurers by number of insured. TK is Germany’s largest single health fund with approximately 12.4 million members, while the AOK-Bundesverband represents a network covering around 27 million people, according to krankenkassen.de.

Both OMD and PHD operate under Omnicom, the world’s largest advertising holding company. The group is currently undergoing significant restructuring, including the dissolution of the Annalect and Kinesso brands and the planned merger of Hearts & Science and Mediahub into a single network. These changes follow Omnicom’s acquisition of Interpublic’s media assets.
