Media and publishing professionals tracking audience measurement will see significant changes as Nielsen prepares to launch upgrades to its video measurement currency before the Fall broadcast season. The company is introducing new data sources and refining its methodology to address long-standing concerns about bias, demographic representation, and the accuracy of co-viewing metrics. These updates are set to go live by the end of August, just as new TV programming arrives.

Nielsen’s Big Data + Panel product, which merges traditional audience panels with granular data from sources like automatic content recognition on smart TVs, is at the center of these improvements. According to Brian Fuhrer, Nielsen’s SVP of product strategy and thought leadership, the primary goal is to reduce measurement bias and better reflect real-world viewing habits. To achieve this, Nielsen is expanding its data inputs to more accurately represent previously undercounted groups, particularly Spanish-language TV audiences.

Historically, third-party measurement providers have struggled to capture Hispanic and Latino viewership accurately, often relying on unreliable indicators such as surnames. Nielsen now plans to incorporate data from the American Community Survey to determine household language use, supplementing its existing reliance on the National Hispanic Enumeration Survey. Fuhrer noted that a household’s primary language has a greater impact on viewing patterns than family names, making this shift critical for advertisers and networks seeking to reach these growing audiences.

Co-viewing-when multiple people watch the same TV set together-remains another focus. Nielsen intends to enhance its measurement by integrating data from its wearable devices, which resemble smart watches and were first introduced in 2021. These devices offer a more passive and potentially more reliable way to track who is watching, as they do not require users to log in before each session. Earlier this year, Nielsen piloted a new co-viewing methodology using these wearables during the Super Bowl, aiming to improve accuracy over traditional in-home meters.

Another area of scrutiny has been Nielsen’s use of data from the Advertising Research Foundation (ARF)’s DASH TV Universe Study. Some publishers argued that the integration of this survey data led to inflated traditional TV ratings and a drop in streaming numbers, largely due to the lag in data processing. Fuhrer explained that the ARF data sets were often 12 to 15 months old, which created a disconnect between reported audience numbers and current reality. Nielsen now says it will receive ARF data more quickly and will better align these inputs with its legacy audience panels to provide a more accurate balance between linear and streaming viewership.

Additionally, ARF’s DASH Universe Study data will soon be included in Nielsen’s Gauge report, which tracks content and media seller popularity by watch hours. Earlier this year, Nielsen delayed this integration due to concerns from sellers about declining streaming figures, though the data remained part of the Big Data + Panel currency. These changes are designed to give publishers, advertisers, and networks a clearer picture of how audiences are consuming content across platforms.

For those monitoring shifts in TV programming and audience measurement, these updates follow a period of industry adjustment. For example, as seen when WDR discontinued 'Frau TV' after nearly 30 years, changes in viewership data can have direct consequences for programming decisions and content strategy.
