A new Australian law targets tech platforms that use local news. Companies face a 2.5% ad revenue tax if they do not pay publishers. The funds will support Australian news outlets.

Australia now face a significant regulatory shift as the government enacts new legislation targeting major tech platforms. The law requires technology companies to pay local news publishers for content distributed on their platforms, or face a substantial levy on advertising revenue.

Under the News Bargaining Incentive, passed Thursday, tech giants must negotiate commercial agreements with Australian media outlets to use their news content. If they fail to reach such deals, the companies will be taxed 2.5% of their advertising revenues generated in Australia. The proceeds from this levy are earmarked for local news organizations, aiming to compensate publishers whose reporting drives user engagement and ad income on digital platforms.

This move is designed to address the imbalance between global technology firms and domestic news providers, ensuring that content creators receive financial recognition for their work. The legislation reflects ongoing efforts by Australian authorities to support the sustainability of local journalism in the digital age.
