Digital revenue for UK publishers fell in early 2026. AI-driven changes in audience habits and referral traffic are reshaping the business. Display advertising remains a rare bright spot.

UK digital publishers are seeing the first measurable impact of AI-driven changes on their revenue, with new data showing a decline in total digital income for the first quarter of 2026. According to the Association of Online Publishers (AOP) and Deloitte, total digital revenue among 13 surveyed publishers dropped 4.55% compared to the same period last year, ending a streak of four consecutive quarters of growth.

Despite the overall downturn, 62% of publishers reported revenue growth, the highest share in a year. The AOP said this suggests that the most significant losses are concentrated among a minority of publishers who are especially vulnerable to shifts in how audiences access information and how AI platforms surface content.

Digital display advertising was the strongest performer, rising 5.06%, which the AOP attributed to more direct-sold premium deals. All surveyed publishers now consider advertising a top business priority, up from 75% in the first quarter of 2025. Online video revenue grew by 1.29%, sponsorship by 0.91%, and subscriptions by 0.63%.

However, several revenue streams saw steep declines. The “miscellaneous” category, which includes income not classified elsewhere, fell sharply, with the AOP suggesting that AI substitution of publisher content across referral channels may be a factor. Recruitment classified revenue dropped 44.84%, other classified revenue fell 38.17%, and off-platform revenue declined 20.27%. The AOP linked these drops to users increasingly getting information directly from AI answers, reducing the need to click through to publisher sites.

Separate AOP research found that only 26% of ChatGPT users would click at least one media link in a response, compared to 34% for Google Search with an AI Overview. Users are 18% less likely to click through from Google if an AI Overview is present. Still, the perceived trustworthiness of a media brand cited in an AI answer remains crucial for user trust, highlighting the ongoing value of verified publisher content for AI platforms.

Richard Reeves, managing director at AOP, said the organization’s research into AI’s impact on referral traffic indicated that these revenue declines were inevitable. He noted that while AI is not the sole cause, the industry is experiencing the early effects of a larger shift. Reeves also pointed to the rebound in display ad revenue as evidence of the quality offered by premium publishers.

Economic pressures are also evident, with all publishers in the revenue index now prioritizing cost reductions and acquisitions, up from 50% and 25% respectively last year. Andy Cowen, lead partner for telecoms, media and entertainment at Deloitte, said the strong growth in display advertising demonstrates the value of premium publisher content, but the sharp declines in other areas underscore the need for publishers to adapt and diversify their business models.

Digital audio revenue fell 46.98% year-over-year for the second consecutive quarter, amounting to a £1.87 million loss. The AOP described this trend as concerning, especially as video revenue growth remained nearly flat. The organization also cited the withdrawal of major agencies like Dentsu and WPP from The Trade Desk’s OpenPath initiative, driven by concerns over ad placement transparency and hidden fees, as another factor affecting publisher revenue.

As publishers look for ways to maintain visibility and attract advertisers in the AI era, some are focusing on their presence in AI answer engines.
